Held annually, the main purpose of the Homeless Census is to determine the extent of homelessness within the City of Lethbridge, by collecting data through a survey which is compared to the previous year's census. The census also provides a "snapshot" of how the community can best meet the needs of homeless persons and persons at risk of homelessness in Lethbridge.

By receiving a number of volunteers who are members of the general public and/or part of social service sectors in the city, the census creates public awareness to the serious issue of homelessness and gives citizens a chance to participate in a meaningful event in their city.
