Addressing Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Caused by Homelessness

The prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) amongst populations experiencing homelessness is apparent to many homeless assistance providers. For some people in this population, the traumatic event leading to PTSD is homelessness itself. This situation creates challenges for both homelessness and mental health providers, particularly when PTSD is compounded by other traumas suffered before and during the experience of homelessness. This brief includes an overview of PTSD, implications for providers, and principles of trauma-informed care.
