Homelessness and the lack of adequate housing is an issue faced by communities across Canada. In Kingston, the number of individuals, youth and families seeking shelter has been on the rise. Homelessness affects all facets of the community but is increasingly seen in low income, vulnerable populations, especially when there is a lack of safe, affordable housing. In addition, job loss, family violence, conflict in the home, mental illness, substance abuse, release from institutional facilities can result in homelessness. In addition to the visible homeless, there is a growing population of "hidden" or invisible homeless individuals, who are inadequately housed and often share space or a couch with friends and acquaintances.
