HIV/AIDS Among Aboriginal People in Canada

In Canada, Aboriginal populations are very diverse, with communities (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) that reflect unique historical backgrounds languages and cultural traditions. According to data on self-identified ethnicity from the 2006 Census, 1.2 million people identified themselves as “Aboriginal”, constituting 3.8% of the Canadian population in 2006.

This report updates current information on the status of the HIV/AIDS epidemic among Aboriginal people in Canada. Wherever possible, in the summaries of Canadian HIV and AIDS surveillance data Aboriginal people are identified as First Nations, Inuit or Métis. The category “Aboriginal Unspecified” is also used if no further details are known. (Authors)
