Recent research estimates that more than 50 per cent of homeless individuals in Canada have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and when undiagnosed illnesses are considered, that percentage is likely much higher. The 2012 Mental Health Commission of Canada report Turning the Key found that as many as 520,700 people with mental illness are inadequately housed in Canada, and among them, as many as 119,800 are homeless.
