This article is a summary of housing initiatives in the Northwest Territories. It describes two eras in housing, the formative era and the modern era. In these two sections, the author sums up policy as well as providing statistics on the number of housing units built. The article complements Yates' critique very well in that it shows the faults with the "northern vision" strategy of modernization and assimilation. Instead of coming to the conclusion that the housing provided by the Northern Rental Housing Program is adequate, the author believes that the units were not built with the needs of the local population in mind and that the Inuit still suffer from overcrowding and substandard housing.
