Relationships are the foundation of our work

For the past 15 years I have been working with street-involved and homeless youth in my community of St. John’s, NL. I can still remember the shock and adjustment I had to make as young but eager staff person working at a shelter for women and children. The shock was the realization of what some families had to do to escape violence and the adjustment was in coming to terms with a view of my community that was forever changed. Over the last number of years, working with youth in a variety of capacities, I have continuously been humbled by the ability of youth to survive under very difficult circumstances. Here at Choices for Youth, we always talk about relationships as being the foundation of our work. Perhaps the secret to survival for many young people is that when that relationship is offered in the right way, they are still willing to trust.
