Trauma-informed Education in the Care of Homeless Veterans

A disturbing dilemma in our nation today is the plight of homeless veterans. A systematic review of literature was done on the topic of Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) approaches with homeless veterans. The importance of understanding and using a trauma-informed care model with this at risk population became evident from the review. The project will use a TIC educational module for staff and volunteers to enhance their knowledge to deliver trauma-sensitive care to homeless veterans. Participants will complete an informed consent form, a demographic data sheet, preand post-presentation surveys, and a presenter/presentation evaluation. The TIC approach acknowledges the negative influences that trauma can have on one’s physical, social and emotional health. A non-threatening environment is important in trauma sensitive care (Dinnen, Kane and Cook, 2014). The Neuman Systems Model (NSM) will be used as the nursing framework (Neuman, 1995). The project manuscript framework follows the suggested sections from SQUIRE 2.0 (Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence) (Ogrinc, 2015).
