York Region to decide how to spend provincial windfall

If you had $40 million sitting around, how would you spend it? That is the dilemma regional councillors will face when they meet in the new year. A Jan. 28 workshop gives councillors a chance to debate the merits of how to spend the Investing in Ontario funds, given as part of a one-time disbursement when the province found itself with a surplus in 2007. Those days may now seem far gone, but the province handed about $1 billion to municipalities, giving York Region $53 million. Social housing was quickly tagged by councillors as an area in need.
