The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview of research/studies examining outcomes for youth who "age out" of the child welfare system. This is not an in-depth review; rather, it is a scan based primarily on information found on the internet (generally post-1995) and recently published child welfare journals. Nonetheless, the findings presented show a consistenly disturbing pattern of poor outcomes for youth leaving care. The paper concludes with a series of short-and-long-term recommendations for governments' consideration which could help improve outcomes of youths as they transition from care to adulthood.; (abstract from the document)
