Between 2001 and 2006, The Regional Municipality of York was the fastest-growing Census Division in Ontario and the third-fastest in Canada. Between 2001 and 2006, York Region's population increased by 22% or by 163,458 people. This was a period also marked by a strong economy, growth in all age groups, changing household makeup, and an increase in the number of low income residents. All of these factors have an impact on the types, forms, sizes and price ranges of housing required by residents at various stages of their lives. At this point in time, it is unclear what impact the current economic downturn may have upon the supply of, and the demand for, affordable housing in York Region.
