This report was prepared by the Knoxville Coalition for the Homeless with city and county government support. It reports on a survey conducted in February 1986 covering seven shelters, 35 fugitive sleeping areas, and the county jail. Although the majority of homeless people interviewed were white males, almost one-quarter were females and over half had completed high school. Approximately one-quarter reported hospitalization for mental health reasons and one-third described a problem with alcohol abuse. The study shows that only 16% of the homeless people interviewed received some form of government financial aid while 59% reported that they worked. The report includes a number of exhibits and tables, including interview forms.
