The recently released 2010 Federal Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness, Opening Doors, calls for us to increase meaningful and sustainable employment for people experiencing or most at risk of homelessness. This means people should have access and supports to succeed at work. Supported Employment is a proven strategy to help people with severe disabilities choose, get, and maintain an attachment to the labor market.
This webinar focused on the role vocational assessment plays in Supported Employment and the skills staff need to conduct assessments. The presenter discussed when and how staff should help job seekers to consider their:
- need for change;
- commitment to change;
- knowledge of themselves in relation to work;
- understanding of the demands of employers in the working world; and
- wellness self-management.
About the Presenters
John Rio, MA, CRC
Based in Houston, TX, John Rio, MA, CRC is a Senior Program Associate at Advocates for Human Potential. He provides technical assistance and training on supported employment to a number of organizations including agencies in MI and WA States . Among his activities, he consulted with projects in Boston, Indianapolis, and Denver to help the hospitality industry in those cities hire homeless job seekers with co-occurring disorders; provides technical assistance to link housing first projects with employment services in Washington, D.C. and Boston, MA; and consults to strengthen employment pathways for homeless families. Previously, Mr. Rio co-directed the Chronic Homelessness Employment Technical Assistance Center (CHETA), supported by the U.S. Department of Labor and managed two Rehabilitation Services Administration grants: an initiative to link the supportive housing industry and the vocational rehabilitation system in New York City, and a career advancement initiative for homeless individuals in Chicago.
