Assessments of quality of life (QOL) are increasingly important in the process of monitoring quality of care and improving services for persons with serious mental illnesses. The client's subjective experience of quality of life may affect their motivation to seek help and continue with treatment and rehabilitative goals. Although several QOL measures have previously been developed for use by persons with serious mental illnesses, there continues to be a need for an efficient, easy-to-use, and valid measure of QOL. Most available instruments entail considerable effort and expense which discourage their use. This report presents a new short, 24-item self-administered questionnaire called the Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ).
