A New Short Self-administered Quality of Life Questionnaire: A Survey Instrument Useful for Persons with Serious Mental Illness Living in the Community

The concept Quality of Life (QOL), referring to a persons' subjective well-being in various life areas, is recognized as important to clinical assessment and service evaluation in the mental health field. Yet QOL is often not measured because existing instruments designed for use with persons with serious mental illnesses are too cumbersome and expensive to use. This report presents a 24-item self-administered Quality of Life Questionnaire, called the QLQ, which is more practical, cost effective and easier to use than existing state-of-the-art instruments.
