Out of Sight, Out of Mind: the Plight of Seniors and Homelessness

This report summarizes the results ofindependent research initiated by SHIP, to investigate the situations of homeless and 'atrisk' seniors and vulnerable adults in thelower mainland, and provide a scan ofmodels of intervention. SHIP sought to focus attention on the issues of homelessness andrisk of homelessness faced by seniors andvulnerable adults in the Lower Mainland..SHIP’s key concerns were the need for adedicated emergency shelter for seniors, andsupport services to ensure seniors findstable, long-term housing.The researchers conducted focus groupsand interviews with seniors, health providers,social and municipal planners andrepresentatives from other advocacy andcommunity serving agencies, all of whom knew SHIP’s work and provided invaluableinformation and insight. Qualitative data from SHIP, quantitative data from the recent GVRD study and information from the literature also contributed to the findings andconclusions. This information confirmed SHIP’s assessment and provided moreinformation on the nature and causes of seniors’ homelessness.
