SRO: What’s To Be Done About It?

This handbook seeks to provide some basic tools for acquiring and renovating single room occupancy (SRO) housing. Some rules of development exist – but each SRO is unique, and the response must be innovative and project-specific. An SRO project requires six steps: obtaining an option, financial feasibility, physical feasibility, architecture, bidding and construction, and management. This handbook presents them in order and discusses them in detail. The authors of this handbook contend that SRO housing can be good housing for many low-income persons, and even the housing of choice for some.
