This document is a preliminary report from the Stanford Center for the Study of Families, Children and Youth to policymakers and the general public. It describes the main findings of studies of the following groups: homeless families, formerly homeless families, poor families at-risk of homelessness, homeless children, homeless adolescents living on their own, homeless families applying for any form of services, service providers, school personnel, and the low-income public. The comprehensiveness of these nine studies provide diverse perspectives on the processes of family homelessness. These studies were conducted during 1990 and 1991 in two northern California counties, Santa Clara and San Mateo. Although these studies were done within a limited geographic area, the authors believe that many of the findings have national implications.
