This report provides an overview of important findings from a major study of young people – approximately 3,400 high school students and 400 street youth – from the Metropolitan Toronto Area. The survey, completed in 2000, focuses on a much neglected topic in criminal justice research: youth victimization. The report begins with a detailed description of the study objectives and research methodology. We then turn to a discussion of fear of crime and youth concerns about public safety. The next section provides a detailed description of youth victimization experiences and an examination of the reasons why some youth refuse to report serious cases of personal victimization to adult authority figures. The next section focuses on the respondents' own involvement in deviant activity – including both violence and drug and alcohol use. We then explore the extent of youth gang membership in Toronto and examine what it means to be a "gang member." The report concludes with
